Confidence: What does it mean?
We have to confront ourselves. Do we like what we see in the mirror? And, according to our light, according to our understanding, according to our courage, we will have to say yea or nay – and rise! - Maya Angelou
The words of Maya Angelou have rung true throughout my life since the day I heard her speak in 2005. What I hear this quote saying, and the truth that I live by is that confidence doesn’t mean thinking you’re better than others (or at least pretending to think so), it means having an understanding of yourself, embracing the things that make you luminous, and having the courage to be happy with exactly who you are.
Confidence isn’t always easily acquired, especially if you are unaware of a foundation to build upon, but I wanted to introduce a practice I’ve had since I was 12 years old. I don’t know where it came from, but I just started when I got my first diary, and it has helped me to gain understanding of myself at every stage of my life—Writing love letters to myself.
Now, it’s not your typical “shower of compliments” love letter, but more of a mapping of where you are, what can change in an area of your life, and an affirmation to yourself about how you can grow in that area. You don’t use any harmful or aggressive language with yourself, because the purpose is to empower yourself.
Hey boo! I see you’re active on social media, promoting the causes you care most about, but you’re neglecting your mental health. We’ve talked about this, sis! While you are pouring out, make sure you’re being filled back up!
I’m self-aware, I stated my strength, I stated my weak area, I affirmed myself without beating up on myself and gave a solution.
Self-love ~ Confidence.
I challenge you all this week to write 7 love letters to yourself. One for each day of the week. Each day can reflect a different area of growth, or everyday can reflect one step in the right direction. Then on the 7th day, I challenge you to post on your social media and tag me in your 7th love letter! I hope you’ll follow along! Love y’all!
